Ward Deals With Brand, Eyes Kovalev

As expected, Andre Ward beat Alexander Brand. However, he didn’t really look all that sensational doing it. Brand is awkward and has a difficult style but a lot of people believe that Ward is showing cracks in his armor.

On November 19th, Ward will face off against the undefeated WBO, IBF, and WBA World light heavyweight Champion Sergey Kovalev. Kovalev also didn’t appear terrific in his last performance against Isaac Chilemba. I chalk that up as they were fighting down to the level of their competition.

Regardless, The matchup between Ward and Kovelev has fight fans everywhere drooling at the mouth. Until just recently, Vegas had the fight dead even. Now, however, they have Ward as the slight favorite.

The fight is intriguing because both will have issues with the others style. At first glance, people will think Kovalev will have a big size advantage. However, they are the same height and Kovalev only has an inch and a half reach advantage. Ward has the advantage in speed, Kovalev the advantage in power. Both guys can box effectively, although Ward will have the advantage in ring generalship.

With that being said, Ward’s defense is not impregnable. If Brand could land on Ward, so can Kovalev, and it will be a lot more tolling. So, what it really comes down to is if Ward can hold up to the punching power of Kovalev. I believe he can. I expect Ward to slip enough punches to survive and outbox Kovalev with his superb counter punching. Never the less, I’m just as excited as the rest of the boxing world, eager to see who comes out as our top pound for pound fighter.

Who do you believe will win?
