Cotto-Marquez is a strong possibility

We haven’t seen Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1) in the ring since May 17th, 2014, when he easily won a unanimous decision victory over Mike Alvarado. However, Marquez maybe stepping back into the squared circle sooner than later. Nacho Beristáin, Marquez’s long time trainer, said to Fox Deportes.

“[Marquez] has never closed the door [on fighting again] and he’s made no decision to retire from boxing. I have not spoken with Juan Manuel for three months, but I know him and he’s never had any problems with inactivity.”

“I do not rule out [this version of Marquez] being capable of fighting against Cotto. If [Marquez] returns to the ring, I don’t think it is unreasonable to do it with an opponent of that level. It would be a good fight, given their styles.”

Marquez’s name still holds a lot of
weight and dollar signs, Miguel Cotto (40-5) should be able to come down to meet Marquez at a 147 pound catchweight with no problem. Atleast, that’s what his trainer Freddie Roach believes. Roach has also stated that he would like to see Cotto fight Marquez next.

If there’s one thing that we know about the sport of boxing, it’s that if it makes money then it makes sense. So, there is a high probability that this fight comes to fruition.

Thanks for reading and being a fan of the sweet science.
