…And the Fighter of the Year goes to…

Our fighter of the year award is highly revered by The Heavy Bag team. The recipient must have had an undefeated year against some tough competition. As 2015 drifts towards its end, one man has stuck out amongst the crowd. He had two amazing fights this year. One against who is, quite possibly, one of the most powerful punchers in the division and then he followed that up by outboxing a future hall of famer. If you haven’t figured it out by now, we are referring to the Mexican superstar, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

James Kirkland is not a fighter who is often called out, on the contrary, he is a rather avoided fighter. However, Canelo not only stepped up to the challenge, he took Kirkland’s best, and then knocked him out cold. Sure, Kirkland was missing his long time trainer Ann Wolfe but who is to say the outcome would have been any different.

To top off this year with a “cherry on top,” Canelo faced guaranteed future hall of famer, Miguel Cotto. Canelo beat Cotto at his own game by outboxing him. His footwork, which has been an issue in past fights, was much improved and was a keystone in his unanimous decision victory against Cotto.

Going into this year, I will admit I was one of Canelo’s biggest critics but he made a believer out of me. Now with a possible unification super fight against Gennady Golovkin looming in the near future I am very excited to see what Canelo develops in 2016.

Thanks for reading and being a fan of the sweet science.
