Talks between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao seem to have finally taken off. However, should fans really get all excited? We have been here before and have been let down. Even if the fight gets made fans should still feel cheated?
It is said that Floyd Mayweather is the smartest man in boxing. Even if that is so, there is a thin line between smart and cowardice. It is theorized that Mayweather fights guys who have no chance-stylistically speaking, are not ready for him, or is on the decline. Victor Ortiz was clearly too green as he got easily frustrated and attempted to headbutt Mayweather. This was also the case with Canelo Alvarez who showed his frustration after seeing Floyd’s crafty tactics and then self imploded. He also waited to fight Shane Mosley until he was well out of his prime.
My point is that even if the Mayweather-Pacquiao super fight gets made it is past its ripeness and is starting to welt. Pacquiao is not the same fighter he once was. Don’t get me wrong, Manny Pacquiao is still one of the best fighters in the game, however, the brutal knockout he suffered at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez has definitely changed how Pacquiao performs in the ring. He is slightly hesitant to mix it up, his movement is not what it once was compromised by frequent leg cramps, and old age. He has also had questionable opposition choices, take Brandon Rios and Chris Algieri for example.
On the flip side of the coin, Mayweather has also declined. He showed a lot of vulnerability when he had to deal with pressure fighter Marcos Maidana. While I am a fan of Maidana’s, a prime Mayweather would have completely shut him out like Devon Alexander did. It wouldn’t have been a challenge. The defensive style of Mayweather has allowed him to be able to not diminish as much as Pacquiao because he simply doesn’t get hit nearly as much.
So why should the fans be excited to see these guys go at it? We have already been cheated from what this fight could have been. Two of the best guys in the best shape of their life fighting for their legacy. LEGACY! Not over who is going to be the richest fighter after its all said and done. Who do you guys think pays their crazy purses? We do. It’s time for fans to stand up and demand the fights they want to see.
