Make no mistake about it, Chris Algieri has a very real chance to upset the pound for pound great, Manny Pacquiao this coming weekend. A lot of media is not giving him a shot in hell because of his lack of experience but I say “on the contrary”, the little experience he does have says a lot. Take Ruslan Provodnikov for instance. Picking yourself up off the mat not once but twice in the first round and then coming back to outbox your opponent is nothing short of outstanding. However, doing it against a guy like Provodnikov is a whole different ballgame.
This is the same Provodnikov that made Timothy Bradley stutter for three months after their fight, that broke Mike Alvarado’s iron will and who has been dodged like he has the Ebola virus. He is a relentless fighter, who cuts off the ring well, never stops coming forward and arguably has the biggest power at 140 pounds. So yes, beating him says a lot about any fighter.
The sweet science is all about styles. Styles make fights right? So the question now is, how will Algieri’s style clash with Pacquiao? In his last several bouts, Pacquiao has complained on his legs stiffening up and getting cramps. You can be sure the same will be true in this fight as Algieri flutters around the ring. That’s one thing Algieri does rather well, his footwork is superb. Pacquiao hasn’t had to deal with a guy that moves like Algieri in quite some time. He also fights well behind his jab and throws in high volumes with a variety of punches coming from all angles. If you combine that with his height and range, Pacquiao may have some trouble with the practically unheard of underdog.
While I do think Pacquiao will win it will be a very closely contested fight, Algieri won’t go quietly into the night or without a fight. Just remember you heard it first here at The Heavy Bag.
