ShowBox 2014 Season Begins with Redkach victorious over Luis

On Friday night ShowBox returned with a set of four fights featuring 5 out of 6 of the fighters with undefeated records. The event was held at the Cook Convention Center in Memphis Tenn. The main event featured Ivan Redkack’s first headline fight on the telecast. Redkach was matched up with Tony Luis who only had 1 loss on his record. Even though Redkach was heavily favored Luis is one tough customer.

The event got off to a ruckus start with a highly competitive fight featuring welterweights Maurice Hooker vs Abel Ramos. The two went at it for the full 8 schedule rounds. Neither man went down in the fight but it was clear that both were hurt during the fight. I feel that if Ramos would have used the upper cut he would have been able to drop Hooker. As far as Hooker’s game goes if he would have used the jab more to establish his range he could held Ramos at bay and took the decision. Neither man was able to establish their dominance which lead to the majority draw decision. This fight was very competitive and a true fans delight, so the rematch is something to look forward to.

The next fight up featured Antoine Douglas vs Marquis Davis. Both fighters were undefeated but Douglas is considered one of new top prospects. Douglas didn’t disappoint with his performance on Friday night. He started the fight ripping several power shots all over Davis’s body. This type of display of speed and power continued all 8 rounds. Davis showed he had a tremendous chin but that was all as the judges scored it a unanimous decision for the top prospect Douglas.

The co-main event featured 28 year old Frank Galarza taking on John Thompson. This fight again featured two undefeated fighters but it was Galarza who made his impression on the night. You can consider him the show stealer as he came into the fight and saw an opportunity to make his presence felt. Galarza immediately jumped on Thompson in the second round and landed an extremely fast combination. That combination sent Thompson face first into the canvas laying motionless until the ref called it off. That fight set the stage for the main event as the crowd was in a frenzy.

Going into the main event Redkack was the heavy favorite but what turned out was a highly contested fight. Tony Luis gave Redkack all that he could handle as he swarmed him trying to keep the fight along the ropes where he had a good advantage. The ref kept that from happening as he stayed way too close to the action forcing them to the center of the ring. It was in the center where Redkack was able to use his power to influence the judges to a unanimous decision victory. After this win Redkack will back to gym as there is still plenty for him to work on. Redkack showed good work going the distance and powering his way to a win. We shall see him soon in the near future. This was a great first show of 2014 for the ShowBox series and fight fans should look forward to a very successful season.
