Canelo-Trout: Who Will Unify?

This is the most excited I have been about a fight since last September’s, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs Sergio Martinez fight. The Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Austin “No Doubt” Trout fight is not just a light middleweight unification bout, but In my opinion, the best fight this year has to offer. Both fighters are undefeated and are coming off dominating performances. This is a fight that could elevate the winner to super stardom and that is what both fighters are looking for. Being the best is their ultimate goal.

This fight was supposed to be on the undercard of “May Day”. The Showtime PPV bout between Floyd Mayweather and Robert Guerrero on Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada, but the Trout and Canelo fight did not stay on the card in specific “May Day” event because Floyd would not agree on a fight against Canelo in September. With that, Canelo pulled himself from the card and picked another date and location. After all the drama between Alvarez and Floyd, April 20th in San Antonio site set date and location. For this anticipated bout. In reality, this was a good move for both fighters. With Canelo being the new Mexican fan favorite and Trout being an undefeated belt holder, many fans will flock to San Antonio for this sold out affair.

In case you did not know, Austin Trout (26-0) is the undefeated WBA light middleweight champion. Trout is coming off an impressive showing against Miguel Cotto, where he dominated the fight with his ring generalship, with his accurate and well-timed shots. Trout is a superb boxer with great power in both hands.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1) is the current WBC light middleweight champion. Canelo is also Golden Boy Promotions prized jewel. Canelo is coming off a dominate performance over a blown up Josesito Lopez last September. Canelo is one of the boxing’s rising stars and has a following like none other right now at his young age. In my opinion, Canelo is hands down the best puncher in this weight class.

This match up, between a puncher, in Canelo, and a tactician boxer, in Trout, will bring us an epic fight. What is also intriguing about this fight is that Trout defeated Canelo’s older brother, Rigoberto Alvarez, for the vacant WBA World light middleweight title. So there is some bad blood between Trout and the Alvarez family. This is the fight Trout has been wanting, he is an undefeated champion and has fought better caliber fighters than Canelo has, but he does not get the recognition that Canelo gets. In a post fight interview against Cotto, Trout called out Canelo who was sitting ringside by saying , “Ayyeee Canelo, yo quiero Canelo ,” “Cause its time to unify this division there is a lot of good fighters, there is a lot of champions and I want to be the best and to claim the best means I have all the belts and I need the belt off of his waist.”

This is what we are going to get this weekend in this mega fight, a unification of the light middleweight division.

The Showdown is on Showtime!
